The girl rode back for assistance, and met some /men, who drew Rose out with his head greatly injured. He just breathed his last as he was taken ' out of the water. . Great sympathy is evinced by the settlers m cqnsequetice of the peculiarly melancholy circumstances. An inquest was- held, and a verdict of Accidental death returned. Miss Nightingale was overwhelmed with grief. Grahamstown, last night. Dr Pollen had a long korero with the Ohinemuri natives at their fortified pah near Puke, the natives making a hole m the Booms across the river to allow the steamer with Dr Pollen to pass. : Threats of actual hostilities, with the Te Aroha natives have been made repeatedly during the last few days, but actual collision is not expected. Notices are posted by the chiefs, proclaiming martial Jaw, but Europeans are exempt. No bloodshed is anticipated, It is probable that Dr Pollen, assisted by Mr Mackay, who is expected from the Waikato, will effect a compromise between the rival tribes.
