'• ' [ STBAUNG MONET. *- Alfred Comlie, remanded from Auckland, was charged, oh the information of VOliar^i Temm, with having, on the"2nd in^pit Taupo, stolen from him a sum of money amounting to £38 10s. Detective Jeffrey, from Auckland, ■ conducted the prosecution.; prisoner was l . undefended. Charles Temm, the prosecutor, deposed •he was discharged from the A.O. on account of ill health on the'27th ,of January. He preceided to'the Hot'Hpringe ard from there to Noble's, Taupo Hotel about 80 miles from Cambridge. Remember prisoner coming to the Jiotel on '• ithe 31st January. Remained / tilPthe 4th* anst. ; waß principally m the prisoner's -corn -any. He had opportunity of seeing 1 bad money. On Friday night, the^nd *imt., I had been m prisoner's Company y the whole evening until 9 o'clock, 'when! •went lo .bed, occupying a room on the .ground floor, -but •"iid not look my door, .1 had £88 10s altogether m a chamois leatlier purse m one £20, oue £6 and 19 £1 notes, a povereign and five half* sovereigns. lEirst missed it about 7 -o'clock rext morning. At once mentioned my loss to the landlady, Mrs JNoble, and then the prisoner. -He said "be was very sorry j you Bhould 'have -waited till I came to bed and you would not have not lost your money." Saw no *" trace of my money at the hotel. 1 travelled with the prisoner l<wo days after tbis towards Cambridge. Was aoquainted with prisoner a week before meeting him •;»**. the Taupo Hotel. He bad a horse whicb he swopped with a man named Griffiths. I told him he h ad-changed a ::0 good horse for a bad one, getting an old "y screw, Prisoner said he was bound to ; •do bo as he was short of money. To prisoner— The first tim© 1 saw you •was at Tauwera on noy road to 1 'brought some constabulary men lo the hotel to enjoy themselves the -night I lost my money. 1 was not under the influence •ot liquor that night at. 10, o'clock. ; I saw. a man m the next room to my'room when 1 was going to bed, but it waß too dark to recognise him. Op the following morniing I asked you to come with meto the Hot Springß to acquaint Lawtry with tbe loss 'of my mone/. .1 said the cook might bave taken it, bui I could not blame one man more than another. .

" I asked ' him for payment, he said ,hfe had no money, but he was going for , work and would settle his accotint when he had earned some money. During his absence "lis wife increased the bill to about §2 lis. He paid me on the sth msb with a£s note. Knew him by the name of Alfred Oolvile. Hud never known him by tbe mm°of Morgan. , Wm Geo OelUm, Cap* am of the s'eamer Waikato, stated that, on or about the 7th ins"*., prisoner oame on board as a passenger, between Hamilton and Mercer. He had a woman m company with him, and also took a pony with him. He paid £2 5a passage money,. teodeiing a £20 Bank of New Zealand note, No. 005091,' and endorsed bis name, 'Alfred Morgan,' on the beck of ib. Had mode prisoner endoise it, as £20 notes were notoommonly prestnted m payment for passage morey, and witness did nob like prisoner's appearance. Changed the note wiih the Postmasti* at Meicer, and had since seen it m his possession, and recognised the signatute, 'Alfred Morgan.'
