A LARftE and influential meeting of the residents of Hamilton West was neld at the Schoolhouse on Saturday, 27fch inst., at ,7 p.m., for the purpose of e'ectiug a School Committee for the ensuing year, 1877.
On *he motion of Mr Knox, Mr P Toole was elected chairman.
The Chairman having opened the meeting, the eleotiou of a riclmol Committee was proceeded with. The following geaileman were duly proposid and seconded .-—Messrs Xnox MJ Taylor, Davis, Martin, Jones, Hill, Gelling, Johns, and N & Cox.
On a ballot being called for and 'Mr Potter elected scrutineer, the business was very rapidly gone through and the resu'fc of the polling was in favour of the fodowinggenUemen Messrs Jones, Knox, Hill, Martin, and JJavis, who were duly elected. -
Mr Jones the chairman of the outgoing School Committee,' read a letter to iho effect that two of the immigrant cottages had been promised to the Board for tue purpose of a schoolmaster's residence. Jln ace milts was then gone into. The btdlance shdet showed-that the Committee have paidto the Central Board £35 oul of the £75 due as «he local subseiiption towards the c >st of tbe building, lea ing a balance of £4O still owing. To meet this amount th..re is now in Bank £4 4s 3d and an unpaid subscription list of £23 12s (id, which still leaves a deficit of £l2 3s, shewing, however, that the energy of the outgoing Committee is in no wav to blame in the matter. Mr Jones then read over the names of all who have paid and also those whose subscriptions still remain unpaid, and expressed his hearty thaaks to the la e Committee for the manner in which he was assisted bj them and concluded by expressing a hope that the amount still on the list might be at once .paid up. The Chairman asked if there was to be any more furniture for the school? Mr J mea— Yes, there are more desks and forms coming free of expense from the Central Board ; I believe through Mr Price the architect. The Chairman—What is the cost of the building? Mr Jones—l think about £3OO, but the Central Board only requires us to pay £75, and if those who have already placed' their names on the list will only make a prompt p ivment, the present Committee elected will do their best to clear off the balance.
The accounts having been pasaed unanimously, a vote of thanks to the outgoing Committee for their exertion in having such a fine building to give over to their successors, and another to the Chairmun, concluded the business.
