Jan 2, 1877. Chtr Kew Year sports yesterday were a great success, the day was a most enjoyable one. Every event was well contested, and net a single unpleasantness occurred to mar -theproceedings. The 'committee "ettrrred oat tb&ir duties with courtesy nnd energy, and the decisions -of ttiei judge, Mr Aubin, were" in every* case most satisfactory to aPI con'.cerned. The Township presented j a most lively appearance. -Large numbers of our country visitors attending the sports which were held in the Government .paddock.

This caused a good deal of excitement, and after some good wrestling a half caste from Raglan named Douglas, an awful tough customer, was victorious. G Ormsby getting

second honours. 200yds Race — First prize £1 55.; second 10s. Eight entries. Won by R Hntton ; Connell, second. Running High Jump — First prize, £1 ; second, ss. Five entries. Williamson, 1 ; Macfarlane 2. Running Long Jump —Pirst Prize, £1 second, ss. Macfarlane, 1 Connell 2. , Boy's Raee, .100yds— Boys under 12 . Prize -IGs. Eight entries. Canny winner. i Hop Step and* Jump— First prize, ,20a second, ss. . Won by the Maori. Kupa, 1 ; Macfarlane, 2 Throwing Cricket Ball — Prize, 105.. . Five entries. This was won easily by Connell. Sack Race— Prize, 15s. This con eluded the pi'ogramme which also fell to Connell.

The Concert in the evening was also well attended and the various ladies and gentlemen amatuers engaged iu the performance, were more than usually successful in -rendering the parts alioted to 'them. Mrs R B L i)uffus presiding as usual at the pianoforte. This lady's song, " Home Sweet Homej" was one of the gems of the evening. Mesdames Millar's . ■ and Madigan's songs were also encored enthusiatically. Messrs Dick, Kirk, Lacon, and company in the Christy Ministrels caused roars of laughter. Some of their local hits being unusually good. Kii'k as corner-man is unsurpassable, and his get up magnificent.

The usual dance, kept up with unabated spirit, conducted the most enjoyable holiday we 'have had for some time past. — Own Correspondent.
