NATIVE RUMOURS.

REPORTS MURDER ON THE CAMBRIDGE AND IAUPO ROAD. J£ovuA,3an.>l, 1-877. There is -great here in consequence of .a report that two Europeans have been skilled by; natives, on the Cambridge and Taupo road. As many of the natives lure have lately-erected new wooden houses, and have large quantities.of crops in the ground, great is their lamentation at the' news, which they all believe to be: true. THE REPORT Came from Cambridge to Alexandra on Saturday last, but was not credited; I learn here that if the road party are at work on native land, it is likely to be true. At all events, the men employed there should either be withdrawn, or have their awns reissued to them, as from; the talk of the natives here, -I am convinced - there is danger, as they say the natives have been keeping watch on them>for some time-past. At Alexandra, yesterday, THE.RUMOUR, WAS GENERALLY DISBELIEVED, But here, amongst the natives, it is accepted at'onceas a.positive fact, and openly discussed iow it -will affect them. A good number were going down to the sports this morning, who will now be too timid to put in an appearance. I have no time to write now, or shall miss the mail. I will <wii;e. df anything definite is heard. If true, the most of the natives will, .I.think, at once remove-further- inland, \LATER.

I had just-closed the preceding when in came Takerei te '3R.au, en route to Aotearoa, via Alexandra and who explained

THE ORIGIN OF THE'REPORT. He showedd me a letter he had received from thence, explaining the rumour. The letter was dated on Saturday last, the 30th December, and signed >by Ngatiraukawa. It says, " Ngatihuia and Ngatikapu have their guns in their hands, and that Ngatihuia have destroyed a lot of whares." They call on Takerei te Rau. (Tawhia) to go there at once. Takerei informs me that a mob of cattle belonging to Mr Walker have been seized. He goes to see about this. He knows nothing about-any pakehas being killed, or the cause of the row between Ngatihuia and Ngatikapu.—Own Correrpondent
