THE COUNTY DIVISIONS.
Elsewhere it will bo seen that two of the Waikkto county divisions hare held meetings protesting against the Apportionment of members to Ihe several ri tings of the County, as shown by the New Zealand " Gazette." Our reply to tho telegram sent on Monday to Wellington arrived only on Tuesday after the publioation of our last issuo, and it confirms tlto correctness of the extract ns given by the "Star" from tho Ghzette published iv Wellington on the 29ih ult. It will be seen, however, in the telegram received by Captain Runciman from the lion F Whitaker, and contained in our report of the Cambridge meeting, that a different allottment of members to Ih it published in the Gazette was reoommended in the caio of the Waikato County, and probably thi« will be found to have been so in the instance of the Waipa county also, for Bangiaohia has as muc'i reason for complaint in its turn as.Cambridge itself Ejrikiriron, or Hamilton E*«t, it will be teen, has met and protested against the present allottment, showing its position in the Coaaty as regards population, a rtage, and rateable wealth.
A MAGNIFICENT MITfIOR Was teen last night ahout nine o'clock, by tereral people in Hamilton. Travelling ilowly from Ea*l to We«t, it appeared to break over Hamil'on like « rooket, after orowng the rirer. THB Hamilton East Sport 3 programme is now published, and alrealy, we understand, a considerable amount of money has been received in subscriptions, but not sufficient to enable ihe commit-e to give -uch priz>s as sh >uld be offered to ensure spirited competition, without which the sports can hirdly be the success we could *ll wi-h them to be. Third is, lioweTer, tull tiny between this and Christmas to get the list of subscriptions filled up, and doubt less the good peo|Je of Hamilton East will rrmdil.Y assist, when called on, in making their annual sports a Miccees
Hamilton West New Y bar's Sports — I will not be very creditable it Hamilton Wear cannot get up an annual d»ys sport eq»al tn any in tbe district, bub if it doe* so, there is no time to be lofet, for it it a fact that may be implicitly relied on, that Christmas is coming. A meeting fcr Saturday evening next is called at Gwynnb'a Hotel, for the purpose of appointing a committee to cany out the days amusemt-nt which it is proposed to hold on New Year's Day, so as not to clash with the Hamilton East Sporti, which take place on Boxing I ay. A Gra^d Variety Entertainment, combining the United talent of Hamilto i, Alexandra, and Te Awamutu, will t »ke place on Fri.iay, to-morrow evening, in the Public Hall at that pi nee, to the funds of which building the money raised will be applied. As doubtless Te A*amutn and the tipper townships will contain a large number of visitors as spectators of and participators in tbe review to take place next day, there will probably be a larg* audienoe at the entertainment of Friday night. It will take place under the special patronage of the officers and members of tbe Cava'ry.
EIVCK Swavs— Tha 'Herald' learns from a g~ntlein»n who has just arrived in towo from the Waikato that several large black swans have lately been teen on that river, and oil some of the iagoom in that part of the province. These fino birds, which were introduced from Australia a few years ago, aro now getting wonnerfully plentiful in New Zealand, and are likely to become in a few years as numerous as wild ducks. Last year a few of them made their appearance in various localities on the East Coast, where there are lakes and lagoons, but the Maoris having shot many of them they are not likely to multiply greitly iv that quarter. It la not improbable tbat they will shortly make their appearance in somo of the ia^uoni in the vicinity of Auckland, and if so ye trust they will nut be molested until they are thoroughly acclimatised amongst us. The WBAiHEit since Sunday has been very unsettled. Heavy storms of mm and thunder have pissed ove- the district. On Monday the-e w.ia one of the heaviest downfalls of rain in a short time ever recolleoted by the oldest European inhabitant, whiqh bun done considerable damage, swerpiny a bridge atOhnupo entirely away, and tearing up culverts. The bridge on the lower sido of To Awamutu, under the hill was atone time 4 ft und r water. The storm occurred between noon and 3 o'clock the same af ernoon. In Hamilton th <re was a heavy rainfall about 2 pm. Yesterday there was again a heavy fall of mi a throughout thn middle of the day. Except to the so whose hay may bo down these rains will be most welcome in their effects upon the crops.
