vision of the coal, Urge fr«<,'men*B, losing proportionably less than smaller ones, the loss varying from five to twenty-five per cent. In one of the tests by which this waste has been ascertained, » quantity of pulverized bitumioous coal was placed in a tight vessel through which a current of air could be drjwn. The vessel and air were brought to a temperatuieof 2SO degVees, Fah., and the air, after passing through the apparatus, wai cavsed to bubble thiough certain chemical preparations which had the property of retaining as well ai rendering visible carbonic acid. Under thtse circumstances, carbon of the coal was ultimately removed Jby the chemical solution of the air as carbonic acid, showing conclusively that a true combustion had taken place — this combustion being so complete, too, that in three montUß nothing but ashes remain.
