THE NGARUAWAHIA BRIDGE. DINNER TO THE WORKMEN.
At 1 pm. on the tame day that the breakfaat nu given by Mr Taylor, the contractor for the Waikato bridge, a aeoond entertainment took place This it .at a dinner given to the workmen employed on the bridge and a few otheri apt daily invited. An excellent dinner wu prepared by Halt Harris, of the Delta Hotel, which waa don* full justice to. Afterward!, the Chaiiman, Mr Glendinning, Mr Taylors manager, gave the usual loyal toaatt, which were drunk with tb c customary bonori. B e then proposed the health of Mr Taylor, which wa» dtank amid load expressions of applause. Several short speeches were made by those present in relation to their connection with that gentleman, referring to his appreciation of good work, and above all, bis prompt patment of -wages. The Chairman then gave the health of Mr Curing toD, pointing ont the assistance h» bad given, aluding to the good feeling that bad always existed in carrying out the work between that gentleman as supervisor and the contractor, each trying who woold beat do bisdnty— the result of which they cculd now see standing » cross the Waikato river, a credit alike to tbe kngineer who planned it, and to the workmen who bad crrried oat the npd* rtaking. Mr Smith, Clerk of Works, was also touted, as were the ladies, and the host andVqiJMtt, 1 hare waa quite a rush o* r«»pcn£mt« to the toast of tbe ladies, and that fi*fc»bost andhosten was drank with n-uoh ei/kwaiin), as well it might ho, considering the fine spiead at so ihort a notice placid btfore tbe oompany. Mr Harris returta«iMlte»k?. Tbe health of Mr Hoje of Taopid was then drank, and having been <hujt naponded to, the k Ft ens |wm proffjesV^y- tbe Chair-
and coupling with it, At the same time, the Waikato Timfs, which journal came In for a full s'rnre of honor by having three hearty cheers given for it. The honor conferred was acknowledged by your correspondent, who took the opportunity, as a tradesman, of thank* 'ing Mr Giendenoing and Mr Taylor on behsilf of the tradesmen uot coi n< cteii with tbef bridge for their liberality in lending tool?, Midi as j»< k«, nereis, iind in fact anything that would aatist them in their work. Mr Olendenning npoke mncb of thegood feeling, or rather the ioteation of hftfing good work don© without harras•ing the contractor that existed on tte part of Messrs Stewart and Breen. Altogether a very agreeable sfternoon was spent, and it was exceedingly gratifying to witness the mutual good feeling which existed be ween Mr Taylor and his manager, and the \rork«nen employed uudtr them in the conatiuction of the bridge. — Corbcspondent.
