THE WAIKATO CATTLE SHOW.

As thet'ma during which entries fjr the Cattle Show tan be received it fast drawing to * clone, the 15th nifct being the last day, we would earnestly route the owners of stock in the district to a liltle ccoie enthusiasm on the subject than at present appt-ars to exist. A united show fur the wholo of the Waikato has been long talked of, and it would be a great pity i f the first should not be a success. Whether we take an interest in it or not, the Auckland people will expect us to show something worthy of Waikaco. There is do doubt, but that the p'aje at wk eh the bhow will be held is along diatanecfrom any part of th^e district, and taking stock to it involves a great deal of trouble, and that, too, of by no means a directly remunerative deecrijitioD, stiil there (are great advantages connected with the bringing together of good stock, apart from public consideration. It ouables owners, by companion, to form a just idea of the merits aud defects of their annuals, and the intelligent breeder may therefrom gather many va uable hinta for the improvement A his future stock. The man who has no opportunity of comparing his own stock with that of others and "With better oues is very apt to form a wrong estimate as to their value, at it is natural for people to tLiuk muoh of wh*t is their on n. Hence, he ia satisfied with them, and takes little trouble to improve until after a few years hj is rudely awakened to a knowledge of thfc'f-ct, that what was once a tol<rably good herd 'of cattle has dwindled do>vn into a lot of scrubbers. There is doubt, whatever, but that a cattle show properly conducted tends to impart va uable knowledge. It fosters a healthy spirit of emulation, and generally increases an interest in the subject of the improvement of stock— a matter which ia anything but unimportant to the welfare of the country, and of the individual settler.

Bridegroom — ' oh ! well ! you'll have to take tun bob aud stick up the rest for a bit. I've got no more change on me.' Thit is what our coirespondent relates, but we can imagine that then, that parson muttered little terso sentences which would b© uncomplimentory to the bridegroom, and to the system of oredit, especially as applied to religious ceremonies. Houd£-SARuow.s. —The Acclimatisation Society would do better to acknowledge their error with respect to the importation of the house-span owB, aud set io work to remedy the evil thty have done. In Victoria* where the evil ib of older date, the condemnation of the housesparrow* is universal. At the meeting of tt^e Acclimatisation Society, held ou Wednesday, the Chairman drew atiention to this subj* ct. An opinion was rapidly gaining ground that tht se birds cii.i more harm than good. Lately, the matter had been investigated by a Committee ot the the H' vue *f Commons, aud the opinion theje gent'emen came to v, as that the hcuao-sparco vv was a bird of very gieat value. It lived chiefly on insect life, and this was what the farmer could do well without. Jt bad been sujgestnd that the sparrow was now butfuienily well established hero to take cuie of itself. He was of a similar opinion, but. he would not go the length of asking the council to withdraw protection from him, and give people the right to shoot him ; other small birds would probably also be shut. This would not be desirable, and the best way to preveut thia would be to refuse the right, to use a gun in killing small birds. The sparrows had annoyed him as much as anybody in the province, but he thought the gopd they did was greater than the harm. — Mr Swanson said tho report of the gentkman referred to was upon the behaviour oi the sparrows at home. It was with their character here that tQ9 socie'y had to de.il, and he was afraid they were worse behave I here tluu at home. But it was not about the sparrows alone that complaints were made. Ho had heard the most deplorable char«oter given to the larks. — Mr Hursthouse had stater) in the General Assembly that the mischief they did was immense, and that he had poisoned ibem by thousands. They were accused of picking up seeds of all kinds aud doing great injury, which would seem to *how that they had changed their character since leaving home. — The Chairman admitted that the lark here was different from the lark at home. He was much more* vigerous here, and he had heard them sing an hour and a hnlf after sunset — Mr Burtt said other imported birds were acused of similar misdeeds. A settler had shown him the crop of a gr^en linnet, and it contained nothing but rye grass seeds. — The Chairman said during the hatching season the sparrows feed thtir young on insects. During Decem. and January they might eat a little grain tnnd fruit, and if they would allow a month in the spring when the trees were "\v blossom for doing some mischief, that aould embrace all the period on which they could do barm, and for tho rest of the year they would have to live on insects alojxe.— Mr Burtt did not agree with that. During the whole y jar- grass and other small seeds could be obtained here, and it was quite possible the span ow lived more upon see is of different kinds than upon insects. — Mr Earl said he had seen phesants with nearly half a pint of mixed insect* in thrir crops. — After tome further discussion, it was agreed on the motion of Mr Swanson, 1 Ti.it the ranger of the society be instructed to shoot, at ieast half-a-dozen house-sparrows on, each month in the year, and that the contents of their crops be oarofully elamined by competent persons and the results recorded in a book, so that some satisfactory* evidence may bo obtained respecting the g«aer»l food which they me.'
