The Premier said he could not give consenh. He said he had refused to grant it in the caie of somo bills of a similar nature. Sir George Grey wished to have the bill rend a second time, »n r l he would expunge tho objectionable parts of the bill in Committee. The Speaker said if he did that, there would be nothing of the bill left. After some discussion the bill was laid aside

He heard it was intendpd to re-introduce them in the Leg slative Council. If so, thnty numbers were pledged to remain and re-ist any such attempt. Mr R ( ynolda eaid ha would not only opposo ain-h an attempt, bat would help lo turn out the Minis ry upon the question, late in the session as it was. Ihe Premier said the Gk>ven m^nt would take no ac'ion in the matter. They w ie i ot awa.ro whether the Legislative Council would amend the bill as feared, but if they imei'ted the CantPrbuiy clauses, Government iron d support them as they did before. In any ca-e, he .lesnred the Hous- no advantage would he tiken of them. Whatever amendmen ■ were made in the bill by the Legnlatire Council, the House would be acquainted with them as soon as p iseible. If the Council did not reintioduce the clauses, no question would be raised.
