THE MAIL SERVICE. Th© Hon F. Whitaker gave notice that he would* on Friday, move "That the San Fraacisjo mail service be direct between San Francisco and 9ydaey via Auoklaud, calling at Houolulu, and that the coastal service be performed by tenknot boats approved by the Government-, aud that Now Zealand* aharo of the •übiidy hi reduced by £7,000 per annum."

SUPPLY: CIVIL SERVICE TO BE RE OdQANIoED. On tbe motion for going into Committee of Supply, Mr Sharp moved as an amendment resolutions to the effect that "The uu> productive expenditure be kept within the ordinary income ; that the Civil Service be reco^nued ; that the re. organisation could be best effrcted by tbe Government during the reoebs, aud that tbe House pledge itself to suppoit the Government in oarryiug out those resolutions." Tbe Premier accepted the resolution* on behalf of the Government, aa they were in accordance with the wishes of the Government, and strengthened their hands. They would do their utmost during therecesa to strengthen and reorganise and economise in every possible direction. Sir Crdorjre Grey considered the resolutions a political design that meant nothing but to intercept the resolutions he tpjke of moving last night. They had neither nerve nor fibre in them. He then said he wished to move, as a further amendment, " That the financial position of the I colony requires the utmost ecouomy in the administration of public busineis, aud to effect this large reduction should be made in the Estimate* without delay." He argued at great length that the Government could make the reduction if they liked, but they did not wa><t to do so, lie ursjed cutting down the salary of the Governor and Minister*, abolishing the Ministerial reudenoes and the office of Agent-General, &c. Sir G. Grey's amendment was lost by 34 against 17.
