REVISION OF HIGHWAY BOUNDARIES IN THE WAIKATO.
STR,— Thif is » tubje»fc that Ins occapiod th« attention ot the ratepayers and reaidants in the Waikato for »om« time pa t, and almost every day affords an instadre 6f the untuitablenesj of many of the di*' nob boundvriei to the requiremind *of the settler* who live 'within their limit*. ■ Year* ago theed' boundaries were mmked out, -and' aa there were compairativtly "few settlers' a large area bad to bo taken in, co that a VitalAdable amount of rates might bo collected ; but now thing* have changed, ■• and lar^e highway districts are found more unsuitable. Take the Mangiipiko for instance. This distict extends f'on To Awamutu almost to What a "Wbata, deluding Alexandra. Now, that portun o( it about Pa&ewnei, flora lhere l "tn A'exandra, hat progressed rapidly and i« thickly settled opuu, whereu the Ngatioiipouri and WhataWhata end of the district is the revarse. Ha\ Moment hat bei-n somtwhat slow, and t>lmr« are not nearly so many Votes. The* c ult of tins i« that partially this porti/n of the Afftngapiko l>i«trict ->is entirely *at the meYov of those who* lire at , (what %o (nay Cill the srat of gorernmaiiit) Futerttngi, knd the late meeting held 'there, to elect trustees for the Mangapiko 'Highway Board, atoply -prrafes 'whatT'ftin now •storting. The ratepayers from* N<ahinipouri who attended ware plainly' made to undei stand that only one trustee would be allowed for thatr represent*! ion, and thVy -might choose u who they liked. One gentleman was named ar hapbaz >rd, and he was elected. ■ JFTovvever, thi» tnlatmtfnt at ths maetrng has ronted the settlers in this district. 'A paiition has b«en got up.signed by ertfryone, and sent to ' tue Superintendent, .praying for n dltiiion of the distriot on the foliowinr gtounds :— -That although possessing half the acreage, they are oat roted ut the election meetings, are 'not ■ fnirly represented in t»i« board 'of trustees, co that many local 'works suff r in conaoquence, and that the new district, when separated, would bare an ar>a'ot 21,000 acres, with an e»timat"d mte income of g250 per annum. * It. will be seen from thfc that the desire to further dfvi'lo highway districts is not so tinreafonnhlc, and until such Reparation is effected, Kgahinipouri wil nurer piMg'ets. La«t year some mon«y, about £200, was voted for a much needed work in this district, but I need scarcely say that the matter never went any fun her. Let us hope that the tettlers, 'hsring enoe taken action, will not rest until they hava the power to sp-nd the £250 al all events within 10 miles of their own doors. — 1 am, <Le, Batrfitkb.
