TE AWAMUTU. July 13, 1876.
Last evening, as advertised, an amatonr performance came off here, •** The Rent Day." by Douglas JerrolcL It was certainly put upon the stage in a manner perfectly unsurpassed (I may safely say) in the Wailcato. The cast generally was very good, but, as is usual in all amatenr performances, some of the characters were rather weak in action and study, Orutnbs was as good as could possibly be expected from any one not really professional. Bullfrog kept the audience in a roar of laughter, but that is nothing for tho personatoT, who is a thorough comic actor. Toby was capitally played, and the performer thoroughly up in his part. Martin Heywood seemed as if made for the character, or the character made for him, Tho ladies of the piece, as usual suffered from tho difficulties, which men alway meet with who play female parts, some telling points meeting- with suppressed cacchination from the incongruity ; otherwise they wero a complete success. The remainder were all oxcellent in the minor parts, but Silver Jack would do well in future to learn his part a littlo more thoroughly. Mr Merriman, after tho interval, gave some comic songs, which, brought down tho house. He, good naturedly answered the encores. Tho evening's entertainment being over, the audience went for the light fantastic in the nsaal energetic manner, keeping up tho fan far into the 'morning. The audience was large, and, if the day had been at all fine, the hall would scarcely have held them, I fancy. The To Awamutu. Dramatic Clnb is coming prominently into notice, and it is to be hoped that they will continue improving, bo that some day our local amateurs will not blush to perform even before professionals. — Occasions COKRESPOXDEffT.
