SATUfiDAY. JULY 15, 1876.
Thk question of providing a bridge ior Waikato, over the river at Hamilton, will be ventilatod to-day, nt a meeting to be held at the ]foynl Hotel, Hamilton East, at noon. Tho i meeting lias been called V.y tho Chairmen of tho K.ist and West Ilnniilton Town Ixmids, and tlie Chairman of tho Kuikiriroa Highway District, and th.mgh directly affecting tho interests of flic township, tho matter is still one of such impoitance to the Waikato district as a whole, that any desirable course (hat may ba decided upon will, we trust, receive the general support of the Waikato Bottlers, it lins been too much the custom to look at such matters from a purely local point of view, but the question is really, not whether such n work will benefit this or that pcrtioii of the district, but whether
it id for the benefit of tlio district in -'i whole. Undeniably this is tlio c.iso as Hgards the erecti >n of a bridge at Hamilton, and not only the Wuikato, but tl,o large Pinko district being- daily opened up Mid settled is interested in it- No argumout, pprhaps, could be used with greater force to show the necessity for this woik than tlie fact that the tolls of the present punt have been let at a yearly ient.il of £350. At times, indeed, the pimt is utterly inndo(ju;ite to supply tho requiteuientß of tho traffic, and at all times entu'ls a vwy heavy expense npon those whosa business obliges them to use it targe-y. Th.it these, and many other reasons \\ hy the election of a bridge at Hamilton is n serious matter of public necessity, will be put forward at the meting wo have not the slightest doubt, but there is mother, and a very i<n,ortant one, though not a breeches pocket reason, why it is to. It ia time that we had done with the so interminable local jealousies wliich weaken the strength and prestige of the district and interfere co largely with its political importance and social welfare. A bridge at "Hamilton would knock one of these causes of division on the head, and we should have Hamilton in the place of Hamilton East and Hamilton West, with all their local bickerings and heartburning and jealousy the one of the other. It is bad enough that our principal settlements should have so largely indulged this feeliag as they hive done, but it is altogether unbearable that these in turn should be 6ub divided into North and South or East and West, as the case may ho, and anything that tends to put a stop to this hurtful centrifugal action is desirable. In this ca3e, howeter, the work, as we have said, is ono of very general Waikato concern. The bridge would serve to op"!i up in ono direction the nail coach line from the railway terminus on through Cambridge, towards the Lake country, and, in another, the greater part of the Waipa district with the Piako and the c.ittle market of Gr.thanntown bej'ond. We nmy therefore naturally hope to see the meeting of to-day made not merely a meeting of Hamilton settlers, but of men from , all parts of Waikato, f>r there arc none but would bo, more or lass, directly or indirectly, advantaged by the accomplish- ' ment of the object for which the meeting is called.

Accident. — A very >cnou« accident, we regret to learn, oocurred on Thursday evening to Mr Howe, blaokstnitli, of Mr Vialou'* .oilablithmont, Hamilton. It appears that as he was procooding home after dark, and in patting along the top of the embankment on the Weit side of Neil's cutting foil heavily into the road. Fortun&tciy for Mr Howe, the late rains have made it very soft or broken bones might havo been the result of the fall. As it was, it was thought that his leg wa» broken, but having boon conveyed home und Dr Waddington having been tent for. that gentleman found the injury confided to the displacement of ono of the tendons over the ancle bone, wh ich was upeedily put straight, though the injury will doubtless lay Mr Howe np for some tijie to come. Whatever may bo Ihe ease on country rouls, a cutting in one of tho principal streets of»o populous a tovvnuhip ai Ilauiiltoo, should be, we think, socuroly fenocd.
