OPENING OF THE NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH AT OHAUPO.
On last Sunday, according- to announcement, the Rev J Goldan opened the new Chuich, which has just bein completed, at Ohaupo. Notwithstanding the wretched slate of the roads, a large coagregitioa mustered up from all the surrounding districts. Father Golden expressed himself quite pleased, and took occasion to congratulate the Roman Catholics of Ohaupo on the marked success which had attended their efforts. They had given undoubted proof of the faith that was in them, and of their dedire to perpetuate the same. He hoped the day was not far distant when a Bishop would come to bless their new Church. • They had done a signal service* to religion, and -no doubt the new Bishop would commend their, zeal. * We may remark that visitors were greatly pleased with the building and the site. There is a magnificent prospect for many miles in all directions. We believe in having sacrad edifices placed on commanding positions. A fine view over hill and valley is very cheering, and cold is the heart that would not expand and feel grateful to God before such a prospect. Mr Boyd, the contractor, has done his work faithfully and well The fine crosses on the top and over the porch in front, and the beautiful Gothic windows — four on each side — add considerably to the appear ance of the structure. A large double gate in the front doo3 credit to Mr Vialou'a establishment, in Hamilton, and greatly improves the appearance of the entrance. The llomon Catholics of Ohanpo are to be congratulated on the completion of theii 4 neat and convenient Church. Other districts in the Waikato could loam a 'lesson from them. The debt on the building is under £iO t and, at a meeting, after Mass, on Sunday, steps were taken to pay off the existing debt at Police, and make some further improvements. The collection waa very satisfactory — £B— and goes to the Church Fund.
