Death of W E Wilson, Esq.

[t is with the most sincere regret that we: learn, by a telegrivta received late last night, the intelligence of the death of Mr William Chisholm Wilson, Proprietor of the New Zealand Herald. The deceased gentleman's health lms been for some lime failing, and a relapse, which took plaeo qd] Saturday, terminated fatally yesterday evening. Mi* \Vilson was an old and successful Auckland Colonist, a citizen foremost in every good work, a staunch friend, whose loss will be felt in many an Auckland home. As a man of business, taking an active interest in all tho more important local institutions of tho City of Auckland, his place will not be easily filled. Mr Wilson's career as a newspaper proprietor in Auckland, has been a most successful one. For many yearx joint proprietor with the late Mr John Williamson, of tlia " New Zealander," he sold out of that journal in 1863, ere it sank into decadencp, for the sum of between £12,000 und £13,000, aad in November of the same year established the "New Zealand Herald," which, assisted by hisjlarge personal influeneeland attention to business, fought its way to the position of the leading journal of the Colony. One after another jthe old identities of Auckland are fast passing away, but few among them will be more missed than he will be — few whose memory will remain green so long in the hearts of those who knew them best, as in the case of him the announcement of whoso death wrings from us a heartfelt tribute of sorrow and respect.
