GOLD IN WAIKATO.

The Waikito district Ins a far better soaice of wealth and prosperity in its igrioulturai ami pastor.),! Limls than in in'jro goldmiiiing msourcs, .still an aJdit;on of a goldlbld, with its population dependent on oLhers for a s'ipply of .food, wonM be a very valuable adjunct of prosperity. It i.s therefore with some 'litile feeling of interest, though less of faith, that we read of the diacovery at tho far in of Mr Lyon, at M.uigafawhL*i, of goldbearing stone, and in tho Anckl vnd pipers ihtit such stone has beun pronounced by cornp.'tout Thames miiK'iy iis highly auri-lU-ous jind promising in its appearance. Tlioro is s j nmc.'i uucert linty, and trickery, mid' delusiveness about finis of gold that wo shall not place much reliance upon any allntr,ul discovery until there is something more to cofne and go upon, than the mero picking up of a pieco of auriferous stone in a creek. Tiie following is the account of the mattor as dctailel in tho "Cross 11 :—": — " Once more it is reported that gold has been found in the Mangatawhiri district. During the last ten or twelve 3 ears, every now and then a report has been circulated of gold bearing quartz having beeu found in various parts of Hie district. Years bafore the redoubts at Pokeno, the Bluff on the Waikato, Surrey Hill, &a were deserted bv the soldiers, it was reported thatspaeks of gold h id been found by different m- m bvi'a of II M forces in the cr-elcs in thoso distiicts. On several occ isious small shafts have been sunk without favourable results. Tiie iiistricts have been examine I by several prospectors at different times, and on one occisio'i a small rush set in to tho .shore of the Wh mgape Lake, near the baukh of the Waikato river. Tho gold report is agiin revived. This tima the quartz specimen impregnated with th^ precious metal is said to have beeu found in tho Mangutano Ci\3ek, wli.cli runs, through Mr Lyon's farm, between the Surrey and Miranda redoubts. We trust that the discovery may lead to something useful bein2j done. Thero is no reason why tho Thames reefs should not; pas-s under the Thames river and penetrate the hills and valleys beyond. Tho distiict referred to is on the line of soaio of the principal reefs at the Thames, and tho discover? of payablo gold in tho district on the Western side of tho Thames river would largely extend the area of the gold I bearing districts of this province.
