The Waikato Times.

Equal and exact justioo to all men, Ot whatever state or persuasion, religious or political • * # • # H»re ihall the Pren the People's right maintain, Unawcd by mfluenco and unbnbcd by gain.

THUESDAY JUNES 1576.

'It is a noticeable fact that an unsound condition ot body seems to call into existence parasitical life both in the animal atul vegetable world. The present unhealthy state of tho Maori body social, and Isody politic, has been the cause of bringing- to 'life several varieties of the genus in the shape of Pakeha-Maovis, land j jobbers, traders, and last of all newspapers (heaven save the mark). The latest of the>se parasitical vermin is a Maori print, newspaper we cannot call it, tho Wananga, originally started to support an unprincipled section of the native land owners in the lepudiidiation of their just engagements in tho sale of land, and which has since been hired out in the interest of the ultra-Pro-•vincial party, and turned into a vehicle for the dissemination of covert sedition and the promotion of disaffection in the native mind against the Colonial Government. It is the Dodson and Fogg-, tho Quirk, Gammon, and Snap, of newspaper liteiature in New Zealand, and but lor the mischief it is calculated to produce amoDgsL a section of the natives would be utterly unworthy of notice. Our attention was some short time ago drawn to this print by a Maori correspondent whose letter appeared in our columns in reference to a yile etring of abuse under the head of its Auckland Correspondent, which was contained in the copy of the " Wananga" he then forwarded to us. "We at that time .recommended the suppression of the dirty looking, ill-edited little print, on account of its mischievous tendency, pointing out that that which might be left to the"conttnrpt it wculd bj certain to evoke if a, !- dressed to Europeans was when publisl c I for circulation amongst Maori readers culcnlated to obstruct the good government of the Maoris and interfere -with the peaceful relations of the two peoples. It appears from a recent number of the -" Wananga" forwarded to us, that our remarks hare given umbarge to the proprietary, one of whom, whether Dodson or Fogg, we are unable to say, has thrown aside his blanket, taken pen in hand, and accused us of all manner ©f journal Vic sins, and notably of being the subsidised organ of the Government. We regret to say that as a rule — as was clearly bhown by the ■" Cross" the other day when htoly Bubjocted to a similar taunt — .those journals which support the Government are just those which receive the smallest share of Government expenditure in the shape of advertisements. That the *' Wananga" has not found the reverse to be th-e case in its own instance, is simply because, we suppose, its opposition is considered by the Government as not worth noticing, and so it came, as it says, to find itself sitting on " the shady side of the street" — a very pro per place, too, for gutter literature.
