THE WAIKATO STEAMERS.

Siß, — With reference to a paragraph in your impression of this date, contradicting ray remarks in the "Herald," regarding the irregular manner in which the W.S.N. Company's steamers have been running lately, allow me to say that the statement alluded to was not ''written simply for the purpose of prejudicing travellers against the use Of the steamers," but for the exoren purpose of divulfeing the! real facts of tho case to the notice of the public Your informant admits that the Alert arrived at Mercer on two occasions with her passengers and cargo after tho (rain far Auckland had left. But when it is known how often the truin has been kept waiting (by tho goodness cf the railway authorities) for tho Alert's arrival, I think it will appear quite right and proptr to decry the use of the steamers in so far as the passenger trafflo is eoneerned. People travelling up and down the Waik»to on important business, hi many do, very naturally wish tn avoid delays, and to push on to their joumty'i end as soon a* possible ; aud it was » ith the view of showing how this could be besb effected — viz, by coaohing it — that I had in writing on the subject. I may add that the Alert is not the only boat that has tricked her p»*»engera by arrival subsequent to departure of train. Wo doubt the lowness of the river lately has been adverse to the punctual running of the steamers j but people taking passage by them ought to be informed of the liability of their being delayed on the wiy. —I am, &c, "Heealu" COREKSPONDIMT. Mercer, May 30, 1876. [Whatever cause may have existed a fortnight since te draw attention to this matter — even supposing the "Herald" correspondent to be correct in his statements — has ceased sinoe the rising of the river, nnd conwjuent ab»ence of all unusual causes of detention, except, of oourse, unforsecn nccidont* to machinery, which may happen either by road or water.— Ed YV.T]
