THE SPORTSMAN.

The Ist of May was ushered in with fine weather, and if the birds were not so plentiful as was expected, our Waikato sportsmen have spot had to complain of want of sport. Parties have been out all over the Waikato, and, as we ltarn, with more or less success. Major Jackson is reported to have made a large bag at To A wamutu ;' but the best "bag we hare jet heard of as made on the lsb instant was that of Mr Steele, of Hamilton, who, on his father's farm, killed 18 J brace of birds on Monday. Mr Steele, however, is one of our crack shots. Good bags were also made on the Ist Twelve and a-half brace were bagged by Mr Kennedy Hill at Tamahere on Monday ; 9 £ brace fell to Mr B. W. Hammond's gun ; and a party, consisting of 'Captaiu Dawson, Mr A. Cox, and Mr Silver, who only got to their ground, gome 20 miles from Hamilton, at 3 p.m. on Monday, and shot till nooa next day, bagged 35 brace between them. These are the principal bags that we hare heard of, but generally good aport ha« been met with. The only cause of complaint is that so many of the birds are small, being principally of the last bi-ood, and that a late one. Such as we have seen, however, are full-sited and in excellent condition. In the sporting notice of the " Cross" we see that one of the Auckland crack «hots, Mr James Russell, d3voted his attention on the Ist solely to bares, of which he killed no leas than 18.
