AUCKLAND A SEPARATE PROVINCE. APPEAL TO THE UNITED STATES.

Thje " Argue " says :— There are stirring times ahead. Sir George Grey'a threats are not mex*e bounce ; 'iv .talking of an elected Governor he is mot, as >iaany people suppose, speaking at random. .His ideas on the allegiance of- colonists to «the mother (country and its Sovereign *nre known to be rather peculiar, and we hear that he is now seriously contemplating 1 a proceeding to which the ugly -name -of treason might .not altogether be inappropriately applied. Auckland for Auckland,; leave us to ourselves and det us collect and spend our own money ,-and elect ear own rulers, was the burthen of his -song at the House of Representatives last; session, as it has been in all that he has said and written since. The time, he thinks, is nowgetting ripe for carrying this into effect, aud, if our information is correct, \ws should not be at all surprised to find him taking steps to declare Auckland a separate .colony, and to ask the President of the United States to act as arbitrator in determining the state of accounts between the old .colony and the new one. We are not joking. Jt is seriotwly stated on good authority that is the roault to whic"h Sir George Gray has been leading up since he returned to political life, and from the principles which we have heard him lay down as to the sovereign rights of the people, we doubt whether "he would think it necessary to ask the 'consent of the Impel ial or Colonial Legislature to such a scheme. A convention of the people of A ueklandor the Provincial Representatives would probably satisfy him, and inducehhn, so far as he could, to carry into effect the mail project we have indicted. Su^li an attempt, however, would probably bo attended with much more famous consequences than Sir George Giey or hia followers contemplate, or than he or they would be prepared to face tad accept.
