THE SPEAKERSHIP OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Tsi Christehuroh Preu, writing om tke subject of the election of a Speaker by the new Parliament, mentions the names of those from whom it is generally supposed the new will be ehoien, and concludes with tke following 4— ''lt seems to us, however, that the newly-elected House contains an hon member who, from every point of view, ii more suitable than any of those to whom ire hare referred. That gentleman is Mr Alfred Cox. In a long connection with public affairs as a member of Parliament, Mr Coi gained for himself a popularity amongst members that has perhaps never been •equalled. His amiability and modesty are remarkable, and his parliamentary life wae eminently distinguished by fairness and moderation. It in a great thing to choose a Speaker simply om his own merits, apart from party claims ; and there is no doubt ■that, should the Government select Mr Cox a* their candidate, it could only beon account of his fitness, inaimuoh as he may be regarded as a perfectly independent member. To the experienced politicians of the House we are satisfied that Mr Cox would be entirely acceptable, for in him they would 4ee the presidency of tke House held by a .man equally free from personal angularities .and party animosities."
