The desirability of not leaving the Southern terminus of the Mercer and Puniu Railway at Ohaupo, until such time as the nitive obstruction iii the way of exteuding it Southwards across the boundary line shall have beea removed, has bopn the burden ot more than one corn^puinJen' s letter of late, and with m much show of reason, that we trust the matter will not "be lost sight of by the Government. In his recent speech at Wanganui, the Premier, while he deprecated the enter rig, at present, on new railway acbenieh, declared most distinctly «nd etr.p'iHt. ally that it would be the policy o°tho Gm- rnment to proceed as vgo -oualy <w pos lie 'with the mam trunk line of the C<>!« ny. To carry on the line, at ptesent in cour-e of constrnction between Meroer an" Ohaupo, to some one of the frontier te t'ementsiu a portion of sach artnviiil work and therefore conies unmistakably into the scheme of future gitvaruinnut operations. Nor, ~we "believe, wowld it be riocft-sary 10 apply to the Afisvrob'y fora further s,'tan to carry on the failwhv to the frontier When Dr Pollen, the Colonial b*frei*rv. and then Premier, whs >t *hort tune since in Hamilton, the District .Engineer, Mr Stewavt, waited upon him in tvferonce to this very matter, and, if we recollect rightly, it whs then stated that after the costof completing the line as far an Ohaupo had been piovuied for. there would still bi* a balance in hand of £46,000. Mr Stewart. we were informed, recommended that whatever sum remained on Ivand should be expended au far v* it would go in ox tending- the line beyo id Oaaupo, and to this, the Coloaial Secretary agreed* WV do not see if even a further sum be necessary to complete it on to one ot the frontier settlements, bat that tbe money should be at once forthcoming. To Btop short at Ohatipo when ten or twelve moiv miles would open up into direct communication with Auckland the most fertile and chief agricultural portbn of the Waikato district, would be, to say the least 01 it, a mistake. Ifc is too a portion of the maia trunk line of the Colony, and as such, according to tbe viewg of theGorernmeut itself, a portion of that work which, under any circumstances, must be earned, out in itß entirety. Our correspondent Enquirer asked vl* the other day to which of the frontier settlements the line was proposed to betaken That, however, is a question beyond the matter altogether What we want is the continuation of the line, as tar as circum 3tanceß will allow of its being constructed, ao as to open up the district to the largest possible extent, and whether one settlement or another gaiu the more direct advantage should not be allowed to enter into the question. " For Waikato" should be our common w^toh word, and as one map the settlers in all parts of the district should unite heart and soul in bringing about a work of such general utility ab this. To say nothing of the expenditun of so much money in the dibtrict, the open ing up of the further extent of thecounti > will be a great b .on to the district,. At to ihe course the line will go there oi'. we believe, be r*o doubt of 1 hat — pas' T Avramutu and Kiliikiiu to the tr. ntier v Orakau — as recommended in his lepor l by the resident Engineer, Mr Stewan, to tho Engineer in Chief, Mr Carrutlait. There are m.my und good reasons for d< ciding on this line of route which we net") not at this time enier upon. Wh \t weiir sire to point uut is, tluu in the niton**! of Wuikttto wid of the o'ilonv it l>i r^o, il would be a mutako to iod\e the ilu/>en vi so of miles unconstrucled, which would . if completed, bi ing our 'urllieriuOst Wai kaio «et leiftuute into dir»»ct ruilway com luutiicatiou with tho oapiiai of tbo Pro viuco.

Tobaoco CuiiTUß«— We >aye just been ttiown a eamplo of tobacco leaf grovra by Mr Lowii, of Taupiri. It, however, appeared (o be of the bett quality, and Mr Lewis inforrai us that ho has about 1001 bs ot the leaf pickftd and readf for drilling, some of tho leares being two feet long by eighteen inches wide. This has been grown without an/ extra preparation of the toil, tbe roots being merely ho«>l round at long inttrrals. He feels confidant that tobacoo might be lar^elj grown in his district at little expense, and would well repay anyone who went in for its cultivation. Mr Lewis also informs j us that hops grow in gro»t perfoofcion in T»upin, and in many place* splendid samples are found •tro*ing wuure the soil baa narer been touched * y the Hpadfl or plough.
