"William Henry Campbell, an inveterate blackguard and loafer, was to-day charged with vagrancy ; also with obtaining money under false pretences- Two young men deposed that prisoner had come to them representing himself as a detective, telling them he had seen them under certain circumstances with girls in the Domain, and obtained money not to "split." Two similar charges were proved. The sentences altogethor amount 'to two years and three months. The rascal *is believed to have carried on the game successfully fdr somfe time. — Two novices in crime were charged with being found 'in a 1 bad house. Both seemed more sinned against than sinning. One wits remanded, the other was discharged with a caution — Jfohn McQuillan, for brutally assaulting his wife in Parnell by dragging her out of bed, beating-her with the heel of his boot, and knocking her head against the wall, was sentenced to four months. Aiobbery was 'committed since Saturday night at the Te Kopuru Saw Mill office. The place was broken into, the books and papers stolen, but ho money. The offender is not yet traced. The Rev E. N.
