PRESENTATION TO BRO. C. LONGBOTTOM.
Sl B> In referenco to the testimonial to Bro C Longbottom, perhaps it would not be conTenicnt for him to refund the money to each subscriber, as suggested by Isabella Moore; but ai the chain was presented to him upon the ere of his supposed departure from amongst us, aad as circam* sttnces have prevented him from goiug, I would suggest that the chain be ruffled, and the proceeds be divided between the widow Stephens, of Hamilton West, and Mrs Jessup, of Hamilton Ecut. This soheme, I'm assured, would meet with the approbation of Brother Carter Longbottom's chtri table heart, »nd would be a praotical carrying out of the prinoipUs of the third degree, of wnioh he is §o prominent a mombi>r — I am, &c, Another Subsobibeb. [As this is the second letter we have received on the saint subject, wo may just take the trouble to remark that if Mr Carter Longbottom does as our Correspondents suggest! he will have lees sense than his friends usually give him crodit for. That he has.not left the district is no reason that he-should return the cost of tho teitimonial. If he returned anything it should be tbe testimonial itself. Bat it was not given to him on the understanding that he should be off, and therefore there is no reason -why he should return it. The fact of its being supposed that he was about to leave the district merely drew forth a sympathetic feeling of regret that prompted the presentation. If the subscribers were sincere in regretting his loss, then they ought to be all the more overjoyed now tbafccircumstances have sparod him yet to the dear friends who were so eager to be held in his kind remembrance, and they should therefore bo proud to Bee him wear the chain in remembrance of them. If they were insincere, then there is all the more reason Mr Carter Longbottom should stick to the presentation and wear it a» 8, continual re minder to them of their meanness.— 'Ed VV T.]
