POETIC INSPIRATION.
BY THE POET LAUIitATI OF WATi ATO
I feel poetic rising Like the surging of tie sea, Like spring tide* orerfljvwog Drmnj{ s-inds iipo.i the lea. Increasing in »uuc vsion A* each liytr tak^a its stand, Coa'i \g that, which cim* before it Nought remaining of the str ni. Where «o many oft hare trodden, When ruuning lifj'u quick race. Now others have to scramble O'er ita now and altered fncß, Like belli fion maßsitfe steepl.-s-Ringing fortli th-ir varied chunoa, For ;ot or wor resounding Are respected in all climes. Lik«B.io>v flikes tha^ »re scudding Aud heaping o'er ihu grass, Eidi particle retaining Its own place within the mass. Like gold in quartz veins running Cm be seen but wit'i a lens, Bifore it* glory sh ne'h, Must be cruB'ied and washed to oleanar, As a ri»or after pacing C) er a iteop and criggy course In deeper, stiller wateri," Flows onward from us soured. NpFer censing in it* motion, Evt r pmssing fiirth <r oi, Till it reaches mother ocean, Mingling with her waters strong. Th -io r ceirin^' restoration, It ia ii'tj'i to the c^ies, And «aft«d baoi o'«r source* Whenoo «gam it Calis ti use Like a epnng b*noi»th a mo.iutnin ■ That bubbles from the ground, Its imre and limpid water* Bringing TerJure »ll around Sus'auiint; is it* ni'U'o As it ripples »low al^ne, Like the hi iod nitKiu our tystem That fljws life to pr.tlo ig. Impulses strong pt)pHllin<{, Kadmut lorvva like the sun, Unva cuada me mine of rhjtmn.' When mj race h•• naarlj run. Thus life h erer fl -etms, Ani cbanKing ai it ftSvvi, It-» wavi tire dry and shallow, Wheie it oeases, Ah ! w'lo knowr. (l B. Bneti. FTarnltin, Ist February, 1876.
