CAMBRIDGE. PUBLI C MEETING.
THE DEPUTATION TO THE HON. THE COLONIAL SJSCRErAUY. Jan 26th, 1876. A public meeting of settlers wns held at the National Xlotcl ou Monday las', for the pxivpose of appointing ad-put.ition to wait upon thp C yloni.il SecieLaiv on hisarrival, to impress upon the Government the necessity for constructing cerfcaiu publiu works. The chair was taken by R H D Ferguson, Esq. The chairman explained fhe object for which the meeting was allied. lie also reud a letter from Mr Leslie regretting- he eeuld not attend. The following resolutions wove then carried. Proposed by Mr J Hanoi man, seconded by Mr Brooks, "That a deputation wait upon Dr Polleu a*id represent to him the necessity of these public works, viz :—: — Bridge at Cambridge. The Road to Taupo and Taurauga, and that some suitable reserve tor the erection of sale yards be anked fot." Moved by Mr John Runoimnn, and seconded by Mr R Kirkwood, " That the road betweeu Cambridge and Piako, from the graveyaid to Taraahere be asked for." Mr Tuck meved and Mr Kitk'vood seconded, " That the deputation consist of Messrs R H D Ferguson, R Parker, John Martyo, sen, James Runciraan, G E Clark, andC Tuck. The following resolutions were agreed tofor the guidance of the deputation : — Ist, Moved by Mr Tuck and seconded by Mr James Runoiman, " That the Qovvernmont do rebuild the bridge lately carried away." Moved by *Mr Selby and seconded by Mr Runciman, "That the site of the bridge be left entirely in tk6 hands of the Government and the deputation shall not be free to express any opinion as to the sits of the bridge. Movefl by Mr James Itunciman •aria 1 seconded by Mr Tuck, " That the deputation urge the Government to use all means in their power to have the Tanpo and Tauranga road opened as soon as possible." Moved by Mr Tuck and seconded 'by Mr Kirkwood, " That the deputation request that that portion of land tioar the Government paddock, No 575 already applied for be granted as a site for sale yaids and in the event of its being refused that some other site suitable in the opinion of the deputation, be asked for." Moved by Mr .Tuck and seconded by Mr Sdby, "That no subjects other than those already proposed be mentioned except by unanimous consent of the deputation." Moved by Mr Jame9 Runciman and seconded by Mr John Kunciman, "That the Chairman of tin's meeting be 'the chairman of the deputation," A cordial ' Vote of thanks to the chairman, proposed by Mr Selby, brought this very unanimous meeting to a olose. ! Yesterday the deputation, waited upon Dr Pollen and were introduced by Captain Steel. The four subjects touched upon were:1, The Cambridge bridge ; 2, Piako road via Tauwhare ; 3, Taupo and Tauranga roads ; 4, bite ior sale yards. In reply Dr Pollen said the Government recognised the bridge as a necessity, and that it would be rebuilt with as little delay as possible. In fixing the site there were two things to be considered : Ist, the engineer's opinion ; 2nd, the question of cost. The deputation left the matter entirely in the hands of the Government. With reference to the Piako road, he •aw the necessity for it ; 'but as he was not in possession of the plans and sections, he could not.give any promise. -Concerning the Taupo and Tauranga roads, Dr Pollen said he believed the native objections had been removed, but as it was involved in some degree with the native question, the niatUr wonld have to be submitted to the Native Minister. He would however be happy to recommend it ; he saw no objection to it himself. In reply to the deputation, Dr. Pollen j said that if the allotment desired for a sale yard was not reserved for any other purpose, there was no objection to.appropriating it for that purpose. Aftei thanking Dr Pollen for his cour tesy, the deputation withdrew. — Own Correspondent.
