SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
(Our own Correspondents.) Cambridge, Monday, An influential meeting of settlers was held this afternoon. The following are appointed a deputation to wait upon Dr. Pollen on his arrival here, to urge upon the Government the necessity of at once commencing the Piako, Taupo, and Tauranga roads : — Messrs. R. H. D. Fergusson, Parker, Jas. Pumciinan, John Runciman, J. Martyn, Clark and Tuck.
Auckland. Monday, 7.30 p.m. Mr. JdS. Mackay has had his protest against Sir George Grey engrossed, and intends to lodge it within double the time allowed by law. Mr. Moat will lodge a petition against the Puhoi votes at illegal, the electors not being naturalised, Mr. Whitaker pronounced an opinion favourable to the legality of the Puhoi votes. Of nine Lincoln rams imported by Caniatic for Buttle Bros., six died. A case of English cholera is reported to the City Board. The Board of Health has resolved upon the erection of a fever hospital. At the Police Court James Williams, for deserting his wife and three children iv the bush, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. James Miller, foe breaking into Tonka' store, was committed fot trial. At unction to-day allotment 68, parish of Komokorau, between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia, sold for fifty pounds. At Buckland's sheep fair to-day eight thousand were penned, To»day was devoted to sale of ewes, large proportion of which were only butcher's stock. Prices ruled — 4s, Gs, 7s, 8s 6d, 9s Gd, 11s 6d, 12s Gd, 13s 6d, lGs, 18s. A few pena of superior Lincolns realised 475, the highest price obtained at the sale. The rams will be offered on Wednesday. All on catalogue were sold, although prices ruled low, and averaged from eighteen shillings*
CrISBORNE. Thousands of sheep have been destroyed by the floods, besides cattle and pigs. The loss is not less than twenty to thirty thousand pounds ; great stagnation iv buainese.
Grahamstown. A large crowd of miners and others attended at the Government office looking for employment. Their names were taken down by clerks.
Wellington. Arrived — -ship Shakespeare, from Hamburg, with immigrants, equal to 338 adults; all foreigners; 107 days out. They have had fever aboard, but there is only one case at present, but have been several. The ship is placed in quarantine, and is reported in a very dirty state.
