Tnu'Auckland and i'uniu railway as tho authorities now call the late Auckland and Mercer lino, is gradually drawing its slow length along towards Ohaupo — much more I quickly in fact than many of our readers would suppoii', and possibly another s i months may sco Iho line opened for traffic. The works aro steadily progressing and whero between Ngaruawabia and Ohaupo the lino is being carried through swamp land it is standing admirably and getting reiy solid. Tho formation of tho lino through the Rukahia swamp will, it is expected, be completed by tho end of next month with tho exception of the culverts. The outfalls all through the swamp aro very good and thero is plenty of fall. Tho sito of the station at Ohaupo has been fixed upon in tho paddock behind the Ohaupo Hotel, as being the most central and convenient position for tho set tiers in tho surrounding districts, and when tho bridges Are up agaiu will be convenient for tho Cambridge settlor! also, until such time as tho Government connect Cambridge with Hamilton ami thus pivo the important and largly producing district of Cambiidge direct railway commurucalioa will* Auckland and tho rest of tho world. A coulimiation of tho line, or rathor branch conned ion beIwcmi Ohaupo and Cambridgo would bo impracticable on account of the cose, aroragiug probably between £9,000 and £10,000 per ruilo, while- between Cambridge aad Hamilton tho lino is free of all engineering difficulty and could bo formed at the lowcit rate of cost practicable inanypait of the Colony. A bridge over the river at Hamilton is iv any case a necessity to that that element of cost uced not be taken into account Tho bridges botween Ngaruawahia and Hamilton are being rapidly proceeded with by tho contractor Mr Duce. The government aro fortunate that ihe work has fallen into such good hands. These will not, however bo tho first Government works carried out by Mri)ucc with satisfaction to tho Government, at we have reason to know. The completion of tho contract at Tuupiri will noon bo finished nnd platclaying will bo at once commenced. But for tho floods, and tho conlinunncc of unsettled, or rather of settled bad weather tho whole of tho works now in course of construction, would be in a far more advanced state. The system of letting tho construction of the lino where carried through swamps to a namber of .smull contractors has been fouud to answer admirably and to havo proved economical to the Govi-rnmeut, while at the same tiuio it has enabled parties of working men to make better wages by co-operation than they would otherwise have done. I indeed, but for this, what with lost time through rain, few of them would havo aveiagod two thirds tho actual rate of wages.

The Rev Mr Cidder officiating at Hamilton in the monrnpr and at Ohaupo at three o'clock in the afternoon. That wiuon Thou bobrowkst, bbtuiw.— We am requested by a gentleman who left a well worn cloth waterproof cape or cloak in tho Hamilton Court I louse, on Thursday afternoon, and who could not (md itagain next morning, to state, that if any of thoue who attended the Good Templar' mooting on Thumday erening, borrowed it to go homo in in tho rain, they were heartily well come to tho loan of it, but thst ho would feel obliged if they would leave it at tho Waikaxo Timb3 offlco, an it might bo useful to hun on a futuio occasion. A Knot-iv Question wiiat bhall they do with ir ? — Wo understand that tho mind of the Hamilton Town Board is somewhat exercised at the present moment by tho consideration of thfi question, wliother a few pound* in hand *hnll be eipcndod in tho eroction of a itatuc to the Goddess of Folly on tho top of the hill immediately above Neal's cutting, or in repairing tbo road from just bnlow the lite of the old school-house to the WBN Company's ntoro. There used to bo a drain "on tho upper side of this road but the recent floods hare had tho democratic effort of levelling all distinctions, and the water in considerable quantities follows its own swoot will as to any ciurso it may t*ke, aometuncß playfully inundating the lower portion ot Mr N it Cox's business premises and at others officiously assisting to mix Mr Troewhollar's flour into dough at inconvenient seasons, a mixture which the latter says ho does not knead. When not engaged in this wiso it finds its way down tho road cutting a channel here ! and channel thoro in ruts of from six lnchei to a foot wide, and from nmo fr:> eighteen inones deep, tians for tho unwary, both man and beast, or for oven tho most cautious aftor durk. Now, in their dilonrja tho town board have referred the matter to oursehes for an opinion, and after ■naturo deliberation wo havo come to the conclusion that it would bo only money wasted to erect the proposed statue at tbo outting. The most obtuse minded of the rutorayorti will need no such jogging 01 hid intellect, to remember under tho auspices of what tutelary dnity that work was undertaken. No, if tho money got by tho sale of tho Hamilton sohool-houso sits nncasy ou tho cotiHcienres of the Hoard, and untaught, nubirchud little arabs dance nightly in their distempered d roams on aldermanic paunches let them put tho monoy to the useful purpose ot forming and channelling the road from tho old school site t*>thn company'g scores, and may their shinbora be light. SifjtET Skvknthbn and 1/Jhhirora — A so.aewhat oitraordinury o\ne enmo bolbro the Resident Magistrate on Thnrud.iy. RosoSUter, a girl in servicoand a minor, had been previously sued by the trustee in the ostati oi uno Josephs, formerly doing btiHUK-fiS in Huiniltou, and strange to say judgment had been gircn agauiHt h. r. She now appeared on a judgment summons and wax ordorod, boing in receipt of nmo •lulling per week wiiges, to pay four and siiponce per week in liquidation of the debt, though we noticed that tho KM did not add tho alternative which ho did in the other ewes of a months imprisonment in default. Of course tho R M did na more than his duty in upholding tho dcei-tion of bis own court previously given, and for which we find on enquiry ho was not responsible, not haring bfen on tne bench when tho original judgment against Hobo M.itur was given. But whoover the magistrate was who then prosiried, he would certainly l»o sei vud no worsn thun ho deserved »f he wero troutod to tho aamo course t>vken somo timo since ngamst certain Hokianga and Auckland justices and made to pay heavily for his nml-administra-tion ot Iho law. We don't know who ho wus but it would not muko tho sliglitest diillrenoe to our remarks if he could by any possibility havo been the Attorney General hinnelf. We should say what wo sny now, that tho less ho meddles 'judicially m any cft«a beyond that of an ordinary '• drunk and incopabla " tho better. To muk« tho mattnr worso a la^go proportion of the original debt sued for by tho trustee of Josephs' esiato was for "lollies," but in any «a»o necessanea or not necessaries, the girl as a minor, and the presiding justico had no occasion to look into hor mouth to nee that, had no right to havo judgment recorded against her. If sho pays the debt, increased some five or six fold by cobU, blu> k lf»§ wideawake tlinn from her appearance on Thunday wo aro injlmo'l to reckon hor up ut, and wo nhould liko t'> boo tho Court in thißptovuice or colony that would daro to »end a girl to gaol m such a case. What a chance for tho overling papers !
