Death of W. E. Buckland, Esq.
— o — It is with extreme regret we announce the decease of the above mentioned gentleman, whose illness had already been noticed in another p\rt of to-day's paper. The following telegram from Mr J. Banks was received by us at 8 p.m. last night :—: — " William Buckland died this afternoon ; to bo buried on Wednesday at 3 o'clock." In Mr Buckland New Zealand will lose one of her beat and most energetic colonists ; an old identity of this province. From its earliest days Mr W, T. Buckland has taken a leading part as one of its public men with credit to himself and with benefit to the country. An entirely self-made man he raised himself from a comparatively humble position to one of the highest in the colony, and in doing so won for himself the esteem and respect of his fellowcolonists. We notice that our Auckland telegrams state that Mr Buckland's illness was contracted in the Waikato. This was not the case. Whatever the cause of the disease from which ho died < he was suffering from it when he left Auckland for this place, as he himself informed us when here last week. No matter, however, now where the disease was taken, another good and useful colonist has been called away. Thus one by one the men who made Auckland what she is are passing from us.
