A Slight Misunderstanding.

The Gartenlaube tells the following: Just previous to Abd-el-Kader's departure from Paris in the]Fallof 1865 Emile Girardin gave a grand entertainment in honor of the Emir, to which he invited all hia literary friends and notable acquaintances In the cource of the evening GHrardin said to Abd-el-Kader: ' I should esteem ifc a favor if you would accept My Two Sisters as a trifling memento of this day.' My Two Sisters (the latest drama of the speaker) was just then creating an extraordinary furore. The interpreter, however, forgot to mention this fact. The hero of the evening arose, and, with a stately bow, folded his arms across his breast, and turning to his host, said : ' I shall consider myself happy in accepting your gift, but as my seraglio is rather crowded at present T should like to provide suitable apartments before receiving the ladies.' was explained to the obliging Emir. Another story is told about him, while captive, and confined in a French fortress, that became his residence in the meantime. His children received instructions in French and writing from a Professor who visited the prison for that purpose. Abd-el-Kader was so pleased with this teacher that he startled the studious fellow one day by preseating him with one of his wives. The poor soul, who, by the way, was already provided with a wife, and one possessing a good shars of thai superfluous temper for which Xantippe is so widely celebrated, was not particularly rejoiced with the Emir's generosity, and had the greatest difficulty to make him understand why he could not accept the gift, or why his eyes and scalp would be in danger it he ventured to introduce a second wife into his household.
