THE TWO CANDIDATES.
Sir, — At the present critical conjuncture in the affair of the Colony, and on tho ere of a general eleoiion, it behoves overr man in the dutrict to exerciso his abiliLie« and iutlucnco in sending tho best mau to tho Assembly. An our choice is limited t3 Moisru Cox uad McMwn, and as their political opmiouß are uenrly lduntieul, it appears that the question reioltres Hielf into one of personal filnutiS. 1 shall fint reriew the claims of the Harapepe aspirant. Mr McMinn is a young man ot undoubted integrity and high peisonal character, » plodding industrious settler. 1 bohoro ho has devoted a great deal of his timo and tome money in trying lo liod a practicable road from Waipa to Raglan, and aa Chairman of tho Harapepe Road Board, has given satisfaction to tho settlors. I am not aware whethor he hai read Adam Buaith or John Stuart Mill, but judging from In* political utterunees, 1 ehould think that a knowledge of political economy is not one of his accomplishments. I do not profeis to be a rery caustio critic, bub in reading your report of hu speech at Ngaruawahiu, 1 confess that I am utterly bewildered as to his political, cued, and am quite at sea aa to the course ho intends to purauo in the House if elected. At that meeting lie was of opinion that ProTincial Institutions should bo abolished, but stated publicly ut Te Awamutu that thej might havu buen advantageously retained for lito year* longer. He was of opinion that Sir George Grey wu to go in as the ltader of a new Government, but that he would not follow him ; he was opposed to the iiaiiro policy of the present GoToruinont, but was in favour of their public works policy ; he wan in fatour of partial denominational education, but at prerious moetiugs he was a strong supporter of a system of purely secular education ; he wai iv favour of continuing tho presoufcj iniquitous absorption of the land fund of th> Colony by tho South ! ! Now Sir, what is to be made out of such mumble jumble as this. The speech is the most lamentable specimen of political incapacity yet ollcred to tho public. To tact, talent, experience or political acumen, Mr McMinn can lay no claim, and beyond simple honesty of purposo he does not possess ono claim to the aull'iugos of tho electon. In Mr Alfred Cox we hare a candidate that any Constituency might be proud to send to the Assembly. He has a large stake in the district, ho has titct, experience, adtmmstratiTo capacity and a knowlodgo of Pai haini ntary life acquired' by years of practice in the House, He has tho ability as well aa ihe will to look after our interests. In conclusion, I wisli that the electors would try and think the matter over quietly, and not hniaway by senseless electioneering cries about bi 3' 3 ' men and little men ; the timo has como when we require hard heads and firm hands to steer cur political barque into a haven of safety. Let jour war cry be one Uolony, one Government, ono Kovcnuo administered by the people through their representatives in Parliament. Vote lor the man who, in your inmost consciences jou beliove, will on the floor of tho now Asseinlily most fearlessly, faithfully, and efficiently, promote tho interests and adrance the welfare ot tho people uf tho district aud of tho Colony. — I urn, Ac, Wjjkaio. Te Awamutu, Ist Jan, 1876.
