THE RAGLAN AND WAIPA ROAD.

"Sin, — Raglan «• indebted to you for again calling '•Mention to th« road or rather want of a 'road •from Raglan to Waipa. Tho preient track is far 6orse, and six milei-boger than wm the old [aori road in 1853, when I purchased from and paid £1,600 to the General •Government for ■land at fiaglan. Th« preient cirouitout track wai taken because the Maoris could not build a 'bridge of more than one span which would be necetiarj at the old rocky crowing place near where Mr Hatlitt resided. Taking that crossing place and the old Maori track by Ko Orangi i* the best line of road to connect Raglan with "Waipa and Waikato. It ii better, •horter, nnfi would require lest bridge* than any other line and i» therefore some day or other certain to be 'taken, being alto the only line by whioh & cart roid could be made at a moderate cost. I have giren full particular! respecting the different lines in a letter published in the Waikvto Times of the 4th July, 1875. Mott of the land in thia diitrict wai told by the General Government before the lands were J»ade -over *to the -Provincial Government I>ut at Boglan has nerer potsewed politiotl influence not only it it in a -worse position than it was in the want of a roed connecting it with Waikato but all that this ttir^e distriot has seen of the 20 millions borrowed .is ten empty cottages built poisibly (or ornament certainly not for uiein the Tillage of Raglan. Everyone 'being ashamed of this idle ■waste of money the paternity of theiecottages is -unjuitly fathered upon the late Superintendent who was General Government Agent. It is understood that Hit Honor Sir George Grey is favourable to the Kt> Orangi line of road being •opened, it is therefore to be hoped that no further money will be squandered in replacing the very numerous bridges upon tho present line. When the road is open and a very few hundreds "would do it (fewer than »ro thrown away upon the cottages) the tern cottages and the other empty cottages in Raglan built during the war will readily let to the numerous visitor* from Waikato «who will visit the delightful Banatanum of Raglan, where climate, boating on our ■splendid harbour, the best on the West Coast of New Zealand, seabathing, fishing, and shooting •combine to make it tke most delightful residence ~^ in the Province of Auckland,— -I am, &«., J C Te Horoto, Raglan, I Dicembir 28th, 1875.
