WAIKATO JUSTICE.
Sir, — On the strength of a promise from the Licensing Bench of 1874, that if he erected a good house in Te Awamutu, he woiild 'have no trouble in obtaining a liqpse, Mr Canny has erected a house at great expense for the purpose of a hotel. At the time he started to build there was •no other house in Te Awamutu of suffi•cient accommodation for a hotel. After Mr Canny had started his house, Mr Lewis started one in opposition. When the annual licensing meeting cams, Mr <Canny was refused a license on the -ground that one house vas sufficient .for Te Awamtftu, although Mr <Canny had the promise of the last year's bench, and fitarted his house first, and was nearest 'completion. It was evident to everyone •that a great injustice had been done to -Mr Canny, but Mr Canay bought if he got a .petition in favor of a second license signed by the majority of the settlors of the district, he would be all right. Mr »Canny got a, petition drawn up and signed i by nearly every ' settler in the district, .presented it at the next quarterly meeting, ar.d in spite of public opinion, justice, or honor) •ifoe members of the Licensing Bench refused the license, almost to the ruin of Mr danny* My olyecfc in writing to you is to expose soch -am <unjust proceeding, and to show the bad way m "which fhc carrying out of the Licensing Act is worked. — I am, &c» 4 Justice.
