THE TEMPTATIONS OF " ST ANTHONY."

Sib,- -In your isrfjie. of the 18th instant, a critique appeared upon the late I.O.GKT. entertain* ment, in which I was censured for introducing a song entitled " The Temptationa'of St .Ajnthony," in consequence of which a wrong impression 'may be 8-pread among the public, 'that' the committee -would permit an objectionable song to'be produced at a concert- under their direction. Will you kindly permit me then, through the columns of your valuable journal, for the sake eofc of the combiittee and the Order^to which I have the honor to belong, to state that the only objectionable point to be found in the song consists- in introducing a certain gentleman, 1 "by a name ".unmentionable to ears polite" (what a fund "of aatire is contained in that phrase). * In plain English I called the Devil the Devil. - If I had Tiised any other of the thousand and one cognomens bestowed upon that interesting individual, the objection would, I expect, have vanished. I know that great care should be taken- in the selection of songs, &c, -to-be brought before a mixed audience, but as I have produced the so**g already several times, both in Australia and here, and have invariably met with an enthusiastic reception, I think,* sir, that' the public will exonerate me from a charge of introducing anything really objectionable. > It is. almost impossible to please everybody, and there are a . kind of men who have^-as much idea ■of the comic element as a cow has of a musket, and . it is as impossible to "raise loud -laughter in the throat *>f death "-as to raise a sympathetic smile upon ftheir wooden countenances. -^1 am, &c, Sam Wellee. . Hamilton, 1 November' 19", 1875.

Sir,— ln your issue of tbe 20th inßtatofc, appears ! a letter signed, *' Brand,'' «eridently directed' at* . me, from>ihe fact of my holding a Power of Attornej^ter Scott's property*, which is- botn a , libel and a -falsehood. « It is rather surprising to ; find the columns of your, journal open Cor the ) insertion of < such vile, Anonymous aspersions on y a man's character. . Let " Brand "-for-the fu- ' ture sot soil other men's characters with hie ■ own dirty brand, fowono tuoli in any-cottihailmEy is quite suffioient.. .Bi*4M»onymity does not* save him from detection «s he h»i> shown the cloven . foot in 10ml of hi# recaarki, and perhaps he will hear more of thisanon. — I am, &0., J. AUBiy. • Alozandraj Novtmbcr 22^.^, 1875.
