NATIVE MATTERS.
"IThe Auckland.papers are ranch exercised in the mutter of •Sir'GeOrge Grey'a proposed visit to the Maori King. The two v provi*cialist organs --the Herald and Star— urge Sir 'George Grey ito make the visit, »nd taunt Sir Donald McLean -*ith •d«sit s riig to it, lest Sir -George s should be shown to be the -ablest and most successful diplomatist in native matter* of the two. The Herald has a statement which we (■publish elsewhere of the Teported visit to ' the " Waikato settlements, and to Auckland of the " King** " ion. Tbis statement we may refer to as being remirkable rather for the ingenuity of 'its originator than for his veracity. ' The Cross professes to laugh at the whole affair, arid poohipooha the idea, that any invitation has been *ent to Sir George -by the King, and publishes the acsount of an interview betireen a native chief i (probably Te Wheoro) and its reporter, m which the former is made to -say, that though not invited by the King, Bir.George.had expressed a desire to visit him. The information of the Cross is Hfcttemore reliable tjhan that of the Htrqld. &Qjnjt£me,«go % messaged invitation was forwarded? by the King to Sir George ; and ,his half brtthew— Te ©nana and 'J>uhi, and the •chief Pikia trijf icb a^large number of natives at ipresent assembled at Hikurangi, some miles .from Aleiandra, awaiting the coming of Sir <Georjj& These natives say .thaijthere uno political ■igmncance in the intended visit and that the two prinoipal personages desire -to meet as old .acquaintances for a merelj |ri»ndlj rjabhinjij of noses. ' T&is njafpoesibiy bd thi case on th« part of the natives but §ir. George hat other objects in view than mere nose rubbing, and•would doubtless aeek to improye the occaiion^tur jurpoitfi.
