11 Keep matches in metal boxes, and out of the reach of children. Wax matches are especially dangerous, and should be kept out of the way of rats and mice; and never thrown on the floor alight. Bryant and Maya or Letchford's Saffty Matches — to atrike on the box —are the best. " Fill kerosene lamps only during daylight, and never near a fire. Kever buy the cheapest oil, get the best. " Deposit no ashes in woodon boxes or barrels j but in a non-conbustible repository, removed a safe distance from woodwork, Place no ashes nor a light under a staircase. M Never pile up partially burnt wood against the chimney \ scores of house 9 have been burnt in this way in New
Zealand. Never put firewood inside the fender, or on the stove to dry, " Kever examine a gas-meter or gas* pipe by artificial light Never take ft light into a room full of escap >\ gas. " Avoid placing a light near curtains or drapery ; or taking a light into a closet " Do not read or smoke in b?d at night. " Place shades over gaslights in shop windows, aud keep goods a safe distance there from. 11 Permit no smoking ,in warehouses, especially where goods are pp ?kcd or flax is stored. " Stovepipes should be nine inches or more from wood, enclosed in a non combustible substance, and carried from four obove the roof- . - " Hatchways and other openings in the floors of stores, factories, and warehouses should be always closed at night* Close iron doorsjbetween floors, when not required to be open for business. Hare a few backets away filled with water, available in case of accident. Stores should have an iron tank of water, always FPleclj on each floor. " Buildings in which cotton waste, rags, or oil are used for cleaning and oiling machinery should nave an iron box to hold the same, as these substances are liable to spontaneous ignition, and if neglected, may constitute an element of very serious danger. 11 Have your chimneya swept, at fixed intervals j at least once in three months."
