From Cambridge ire learn that a Ball, given under the auspices of the Good Templars, was a success. Constable JFarr has betn transferred to the Bay of Islandfi. He wu very popular in the district, on acccmat of his zeal, courtesy, and impartiality. The meeting of the literary Society, on Tuesday evening, wa* poorly attended, owing to the fact that it was' not advertised. A musical and literary entertainment, with a Spelling Bee, will, take place on the 26th. ■ [N.8,--We like to encourage these things, bat we cannot always advertise them gratis. Newspapers, like other commercial affairs, cannot afford to give away their wares* Such is life, de ar boys.] .- Alexandra correspondence states that Tawhiao is feasting as usual. It is reported that Tawhiao will receive a visit from Sir George Grey during the summer* Canoes are down with produce.
The late respected and popular District Bjngineer, Mr Clarke, announces in our advertising columns that he has commenced business as a surveyor and Civil Engineer. He deserves to succeed, and has our best wishes. A meeting to form ft Cricket Club under the title of the " United Cricket Club Tig convened for Tuesday evening next ? &, the I 'Hamilton Hotel, at half-past seven o'clock sharp. It is to be hoped that the Race Com. tnittee will shortly arrive at some decision respecting the lite'for holding this year's races. We are informed that the course on Mr Cox's station will aot be fit. Mr Runciman has offered the Club a racecourse on his property, and to erect the necessary posts, al his own expense. The matter, is under consideration. We would suggest for the^consideration of the Club the advisability of Ohaupo as a suitable aite for the next races, as being more j acceptable to the majority of settlers, and the most likely to conduce to unanimity of action. One of the bridges near Rangiriri has been carried away by a flood caused by recent rains. Mr Vialou, of Hamilton West, has just completed a very neat, Whitechapel cart The vehicle is strong, light* weli-finished in every part, and i* creditable -to the manufacturing resources of the district.
