HAMILTON WEST ELECTION.
•Sib —In view of the election to fill a in the' Hamilton West Town Board which cornea off this afternoon, 1 would call the attention of the ratepayers to » few facts which are worth their motice. ft has leaked out daring the past ttwo or three days that the Board has "ceiTed tenden for * contract for cutting down the h>U mear Wood's and gravelling the road to No 1 .bridge. The coat of this " job/* will be ;— Out. tting downtke slope, £174 10s ; gravelling, £10} travelling road to No 1 bridge, £64, ; suptrvmon, fa per cent, £17 17s ; , total, «K6 17s. Now, air,l*rould aftwhrt necessity there is for this wholesale sacrifice of the funds of the district upon this "job " when the back streets of the township ar« in great need of rmnrtt The financial position of the Board I believe to be tfchis. It has an overdraft of £30 at the Bank, which, with the contract, will bring its liabilities «ip to £285 17s. Now where on earth are the funds to-come from ? The rates this year will amount ito'about £LOO, and it may be possible to get in £30 of arrears, total £130. Is it intended to depend the punt receipts entirely upon thia pre.ofous job P X », 4'aen there is a farther sum of d£l6o available, total £280. Thus, sir, at the end ■of the year tbe Board will be insolvent, for -even if the "'job*' is done at the price fixed, not a penny will be available ior current expenses, and other necessary works. Hamilton sailers ■from the want of a landing stage for the statmera, ifche back stresls need repairs, and there are outstanding labilities to bo mot, but yet everything is to be swamped in this precious "job, in whi<* if all I bean's correct, one or more mem--bera V the Board are interested. In fact, air, nt is said in one quarter., that a member of the IBoard actually got one of the ratepayer* to ten- , -der for him, but the little more was spotted by I-imM t "JI the contract. Also it is said that Mr MarkuPSagaaistthis waste of the rate money an - .a pet schsme, *nd that it was carried agamat him •bv a clique. I hope, sir, at the meeting oo Tues.day the ratepayers will freely express their opinions upon this uselesa spending of the funds, twhilethe township generally is ueglected.— l ana, Batbpat?«.
