Thera were about 80 present. Mr J H Smith was voted to the chair, and conducted the proceedings with hii usual courtesy and tact. Mr J Forrest mored, and Mr J P Campbell seoonded " That this meeting, in view of the large population in the Waikato district, is of opinion that an injustice is proposed to be done to the Waikato settlers by the Representation A ct Amendment Act, in not providing for an additional member for the district* Mr Campbell proposed, and Mr Fisher seconded, that the following be a Committee to frame % petition embodying the views of the meeting and canvas the district for signatures : Messrs J H Smith, J Runciman, Forrest and J P Campbell. It was then proposed by Mr John Martyu and seconded by Mr Fisher, that the petition be ferwarded to Major Jackson for presentation to the House of Assembly, A considerable amount of time waa occupied in discussion, butno important point was raised, and all seemed unanimous in concurring with the object of the meeting. The following is a copy of the petition : — To the Honourable thetlouse of Representatives in Parliament assembled. The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Cambridge and the neighbourhood, humbly sheweth:— That the Waikato is estimated to contain an European population of over five thousand inhabitants with only one representative in your Honorable House. That your petitioners perceive that in the Representation Act Amendment Act now before Parliament no provision has been made for granting an additional member for Waikato. That your petitioners would beg to remind your Honourable House that the Waikato district is fa*t increasing in wealth and population as the returns of the last Census will shew. Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that in the Bill now before your Honorable House you will cause a clause to be inserted granting an additional member to the Waikato district. And yonr petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray. Messrs J H 9mith, John Runciman, Jaaes P Campbell, James Hally, J W Merrick, Charles Tuck, John Haughton, John Wilson.
