In the House the second reading of the Friendly Societies Act Amendment Bill was agreed to. The Bill remedies a defect in the principal Act which left a loophole for the acquittal of treasurers of Friendly Societies convicted of embezzling the funds. Under the Amendment Bill they will become servants of the Trustees, and liable as such. The admission of Evidence Bill also passed the second re.iding. T.ie Bill makes facilities for the admission of the evidence of parties in breaches of promise of marriage aises, and of husbands and wives in cases where adultery is alleged. Another clause of the Act permits the making of declarations by persons who object to taking the oath, and renders a false declaration punishable in the same m inner as perjury on oath. On the motion of Mr Luckie, an amendment was mule in the Marriage Act Amendment Bill, considerably relucing the fee for marriiga by a Ito'iatrar.
