THE ORDER OF THE BATH.

g IR) — I xra,§ intensely amnted at reading a lrffcr in Saturday'! " Herald," by that irrfpreiaibts T. H. Troupe, headed tha " Oati) of Allegiance.'' I expected he would hire givea us some miormation about ''taking the oath." Not boing a CKod lemplkr myiolf, [I may state tdab I hare

taken the oath rather often, and I prefer it wiih sugar. Mr Troupe, bowe^r, saytr nothing at all about that. The only coherent fact to be gathered from his letter is ihe following :— " Regarding the editorial -assertions of the « Star,' I leave them in the hands of the parties charged with the oflence, and at for the utterance itself, when I mention that a member of my family has the honour of being enrolled in fhe Order of the Bath with Sir George Grey, I feel sure he will believe me when I add that, the words imputed to him surprised me quite as much as they did his many admirers in Auckland city." Sir, it must bo i very instructive to us benighted plebeians to learn that Mr Troupe is actually b'ensed with, a relative who <( has the honor of being enrolled in the Order of the Bath." But it really is mo^t augravatingthat he did not youchsafo to inform us what degree of kirmhip he bears to the distinguithed man who is in the Bath. Is he a fortysecond couain, or perchance a " nearer and dearer one btill ? ' Now gir, my anoesters I frankly admit are not in the "Order of the Bath.' 1 But as I don't like to let Mr Troupe have all the aristocratic connections to himself allow me to inform yon, sir, that one of my family takes a bath regularly every morning. If thi# it not being enrolled in the order of the bath, I ihould like to know what i?. Can Mr Troupe say as much for hit relatives ? It appears to me, Mr Editor, that Mr Troupe's letter contains a good deal to o much of Bathos.— l am, &o. " Go to Bath !"
