The Commodore went about the village endeavouring to open up friendly relations, in which he [appeared to be successful until just about go embark, when the nntivea fired at him, "wounding hitxx in the side with a poisoned arrow, and a dozen arrows followed, wounding four of the ship's crew, and again wounding 1 the Commodore severely in the head. He sent a message ashore of his intention to bombard the village, so that the natives might leave, and he then destroyed it. The Pearl afterwards sailed south to got into a more favourable ■o'invate for the sufferers, but, after lingering two or three days, the Cjmmodore and two seaman died.
