WAIKATO MATTERS AT WELLINGTON. (From our Special Correspondent.) Wellington, August 16.
I am fully persuaded that the Government will put a bridge across the Waikaro at Hamilton, but the matter is not yet set led. The Minister of Public Works is making iurther enquiries jespectmg thu cost of the proposed bridge. I am nut co sanguine as to the Waiiiato and Thames JTaihvay I do not think Government h-ive 250,0v)0 a 'ies of land to give at tlic present time, aud i Sir George Giey is making a great deal of unnecessary fuss about the Pjako Swamp, charging the Government wich squandering the public estate. I do not think he cares a jot about public affairs, or the interests of the Waikato Hl3 object appoars to be to cast blame on the Government, tho hank of New Zealand, Sir James F r^usoon, and through them to hit th« Colonial Office in London. He merely came hare to grind his axe. v s ir George Grey is trying to preveut the Government giving a title to ilio Piaso Swamp Company, aud tried to introduce a bill to prevent an Order in Council being is3ued, 'nit wjw not permiLted by a majonty of tlie House The session will probably be long and dreaiy. ji'ho i'rovinciihat.a are domg their übmrt t to delay mr-n^ure?. Tloir clamour
get aomet liin^ to waste tirre upon, but (he Q-iv-ferumeat will suspend all other business until the abolition and Local Government Bilta are fiiher passed or tl.rowa'out.
