COLONEL HARINGTON'S CANDI DATURE.
Stb, — Colonel Ha*ington hn«, I perceive, bj a recent iisue of the Wajkato Times, advertised hit intention of beccmHi@» a candidate fjrthe h<jpbur of representing the ma«t Coast Electorate iri'tue 1 * eneral Assembly. The sixmo number of the Timbs contain* a laudatory paragraph regarding lhe gallant Colonel* candidature. Consequent upon my knowledge of the independent oharaoierof one of the proprietors of the Wajk*to Times, who started the Bay of Plenty paper fome three jexra ago, and oonducte I that journal with credit to himself and the disTicfc it; represented, until, (Ift us hope for his take), removed to the fair«r fields and more fertile plains of mighty Waikato, ask you to insert the following brief remarks. The numerous men of Col. Hanngton's regiment of First Waikutos, will doub'less be able, as they arc willing, (o testify to the unielh'sh and patriotic nature of the ' gallant Colonels exenio: s on behalf of his regiment, and the district of the East Coist. Benedbuiona yet untold await him on ' p«tmnatinn day,' for the mode in which be, allotted land for lm men in inaccesihle plane-*, when he could, by a word, havo secured sites in, o<- •nffiaientljtgjaeur the town ot Tauranga to hare detain* d a great p^rt ot the Miltiia, and to hare attracted many other people. Colonel Harington tai 1 the other day, that " his interests are Menl-cal with his ontutituercy.' HewiU not see 1 * office, not; he? Hc|teould not leave hia constituents in the lurch, ancilbeooni© a tool of the Government ? No, fur from it. Then let us Tote for Colonel Haringlon, who, at a late Colonial firing catch made a. book to win against the Auckluni province ; who, when he had a regiment of men, mo«t of whom he could hare settled in Tauranga, >md who Itft. in deepnir of finding approach to their farms, coolly »nH heartlessly sold them with t view of making a " select settlement of capitalists fit to a »ociate. wi^ft ono anotli«r." Colonel HarlDgton will find out. when it is ton lato that our '" interpfets ar» identicj.l with h's own." He will have that opinion confirmed on the election day. — t am, &c, •' Old Waikato " Tauranga, August sth. [AYe fail to see how the que-fcion of Col. Harrington's candidature for the Ensfc Coit^ can ■.affect the '^^tiikato, but as it is ju%t p )eBiblo^that -nany old military •• ttlt-ra and o'hers have an interest in the career of the " gallant ' Colonel," we give the le-'ter a place. Our correspondent evidently supposes that a little judicious flattery will be the " open sesame" t'> our columns, bat he labours under a grievous mistake. We can no', in future under talve to publish puffs of a similar character otherwise" than us an advertisement. As to the a legations regardiug Col. Harington himoeJf, we h.*ve bo personal kno«vled{»G, and decline ia any way to endorse them. Ed. W. T.>
