Auckland, Monday Evening. Du(ier,the signalman of the North-shore, is dead. Joseph Howard, fe.ll down a trap door in the shop of.Chemptaloup and Cooper to-day, his back is slightly injured. The City Council to-day, unanimously resolved to petition the General Assembly ag tinst the bill making the office of Mayor elective by ratepayers. Serious quarry accident lias occurred at Mount Eden. Jol;n Brown was working in the City Council quarry, when a large piece of stone fell and knocked him down. William' Knight, and William' Jarrow, were also quarrying, when a charge exploded prematurely and both were badly burnt. The Provincial Accountant has received a letter shewing that Leggett when he used the Provincial money, had written home asking his friends to pay the amount to Ridgway and Sons, on behalf of the Council. They were willing to do so, but wrote out for further information. This letter has miscarried and Leggett believing they were indisposed to comply, abandoned himself to fate. When his friends heard the result they vrere in the greatest distress, and went to Ridgway offering to pay the money. A petition is in circulation to-day, for the release of Leggett.
