HAMILTON DISTRICT BOARD.

Th;e annual meeting of the Hamilton Highway District ratepayers wa3 held at the Hamilton Hotel, on Saturday afternoon, present — Messrs S. Steele (in the chair), D. Me Nichol, W Jones, J. Knox, W, Atkinson, J. Ridler, J. Webb, J. Raynes, W. Alexander, J. Hinton, and J. M. Gelling. The Chairman read the advertisement convening the meeting from tlje Waikato Times. He then read the balance sheet for the year ending June 30th, 1875 as follows :—^Receipts, rates collected, £210 19s lid; g*mteg£2sQ sfoste\,UGl 4s lid. Expenditure : PaiH^ytjwnirl|riroid^£li2 16s lOd; metalling and chanhelliifrgi*' J^T^s^Dridges and culverts, <£80 4s 6d ; other works, £5 12s; commission for collecting rates, £13 8s 8d ; salaries and rent, £8; legal expenses, £1 11s 6d; Thistle Act, £27 12s lOd ; total, £254 2s 4d. Mr Atkinson said there was a contract in hand amounting to £100. Mi* Knox said he and Mr Ridler had audited the accounts, but there were two vouchers in the hands j of the chairman. The auditors had refused to certifyto the accounts until the vouchers were produced. The Secretary said Mr Knox was a most critical and skilful auditor. Several ratepayers expressed satisfaction at the careful manner in which the accounts had been audited. Me Nichol proposed, and Mr Raynes seconded, that the balance sheet be adopted. Mr Knox said the jjWcNmnts^Jtare correct, and there would be n^rt^d^on^perMft^ to them when the two vouchers we w pirodnc«ir-*~ vj* Mr Webb opposed^ the motion. Mr Jones said it was not worth while making further delay. Mr Atkinson proposed and Mr Ridler seconded that the rate be one penny in the £ on the value to sell, which was agreed to. The following trustees were then elected for the ensuing year : — JMessrs Steele, Ridler, Atkinson, Alexander, and Raynes ; Auditors, Messrs Knox and Jones. No fence-viewers were elected, the matter not having been advertised. A vote of censure was passed upon Messrs Cox, Hammond and Hunt, for not haviog attended the meeting to give information. A discussion ensued regarding the valuation of land. Mr. Jones contended that the valuation was unequal, the quality of various lands being different. Mr Atkinson pointed out that opportunities were afforded for appeal. He then referred to the debt due by the Town Board to the District Board. After some further discussion the meeting ended. The new Board afterwards met to elect a chairman. On the. motion of Mr Atkinson, seconded by Mr Ridley, Mr S. Steele was elected to the office. It was further resolved that the Board meet on the last Tuesday in each month at 2 p.m. ; that applications for the office of collector, secretary, and surveyor be invited ; that the chairman write to the late chairman for the missing vouchers, and^that Mr Gelling be authorised to provide a revised' roll at ah expense of £3 3s.
