RAILWAY MISMANAGEMENT.

To the Editor of the Waikato Times. * Sir,— l read the letter of " A Waikato Settler ' •jvith much surprise. I can add to his facts by .-stating that a few days ago I had some goods .com-

ing up from Papakura by train to Mercer. The guard said they would measure about three tons. I requested him to measure them, but he said he had nothing to measure them with. Now, I was sure they could not measure three tons, and I objected to pay so much. The porter then proposed that I should take on the goods, and if the Waikato S.N. Compiny found them to be less than three tons, the railway would allow t^e difference on the next goods I got up. The Waikato S.N. Company found that the goods measured only two tons and a quarter. Consequently I have paid the railway three-quarters of -a ton in excess o£ what I ought to have paid, and as I am not likely to get up any more goods for some time, I shall be all tha/ tia^e out of my money, and should the porter beofrmtediF may lose it altogether. The system is ver^JoiJ^ and might open the door to any amount of swindling and imposition upon the public. Besides the system of measurement is bad. It ought to be by weight, according to the different classes of goods. As it is a person may send a ton of heavy goods at the same price as another person could send only a hundred-weight or less. Trusting the attention of the authorities will be calle<Cto this matter.
