A fire broke out in Grace's two-storey wooden building in Wyndham-street to-day, but was extinguished after burning the lining of ths ceiling in one room. It was caused by a child playing with matches. At the Police Court, James Somerfield, of the North Shore, was fined £20 for allowing scabby sheep to- run at large. Inspector Lewis said scab existed in no other part of the province. Mr Beckhara commented on the seriousness of the case, pointing out that the fine for permitting scabby sheep to trespass was a hundred pounds, and for driving them on any public road, fifty pounds. Thomas Lyon, charged with neglecting to maintain a child on the training ship, pleaded inability to obtain work. Ho had been in the Waikato. He was ordered to pay 6s a week. He promised to pay it to the constable at Hamilton. The foot race between Ellis and O'Hare was won by the former easily. The new schooner, Rhodrick Dim, has arrived from Sydney. Her bulwarks were carried away in a gale.
