THE CENSUS RETURNS. — WAIKATO DISTRICT.
Thk detailed Census Returns for the year 1874, just to band, shew that the population of the Wai kato'had increased from 3,274 in 1871, to 4,558 in 1874; the male population being 2,897, and female 1,661. The number of electors had decreased from 854 in 1871, to 772 in 1874. This surely indicates a great and culpable amount of apathy on the part of the settlers, and it is to be hoped that the additions to the roll during the current year will shew that the people are alive to the importance of the franchise, in view of the approaching general elections. The per centage of persons to a representative is 4*558, shewing that the Waikato is disproportionately represented in comparison with districts of much less importance, area, and population. Wairarapa, with a population fewer than 100 persons in excess of Waikito, is blessed with two members of the House of Representatives, jfwhile we have but one. Fven Sleepy Holl#w, with a population less thanUOOO in excess of the Waikato, sends tw(^^pa^rsS^o ihe ; Cheviot, with a popul^tuHsiNp^ orHy TL2s.3>JWallace 1,453, Collingwood l,3^sNliurbs\pfVehon. 1899, Manawatu 1,791, Egmo\t I^>l3, and Grey and Bell "1808 — one menrber* each. The representation of the Waikato was fixed at a time when the district was only just recovering from the effects of a war, when it was sparsely settled, and when it possessed little wealth. It can now fairly claim an additional member, and it is the duty of the present Parliament before it expires to readjust the representation, with the object of enabling the district to return two members at the next election. We trust Major Jackson will bring the matter before the House, and he will leceive the ordial support of the Auckland members as a whole. In a future article we purpose to compare the population, area, and resources of tha Various districts above-named in order to de^Jtes^te\}hV disparity in the representation, and\tStofaiftiess-4o- the Waikato. Resuming our notide of the returns, we find that there were 74 male halfcastes and 77 females in this district; inhabited houses, 902; uninhabited, 87 ; building, 9 ; tents and dwellings with canvas roofs, 80. There were two buildings of stone, 818 of wood and iron, 63 of raupo, 18 of sods and clay, one not described, and 58 of brick, stone, wood and iron combined. Of 2 roomed houses there were 198; 3 and 4 rooms, 359; 5 and 6 rooms, 129 ; over 6, 113 ; not stated, 6. Europeans living in houses numbered 4,014 ; in huts, 247 ; in tents and dwellings with canvas roofs, 289; travellers and persons sleeping in tents or dwellings canvas roofs, 8. ' Returns of the population (excluding Maoris), number of dwelling-houses, inhabited and uninhabited, and in course of erection, <fee, classified according to towns, give the following figures : —
Four houses were being built in Waikato. There were two tents or dwellings with canvas roofs at Cambridge, and at ifae same \pl^ce Xssro houses of brick or stone. " *
